we're going to follow breaking news for you this morning where police are on the scene of a fatal accident. we'll tell you what's been happening in the last 20 minutes and what we learned about how big this accident scene is. >> a road is still closed off in a bay area neighborhood after a car crash late last night. what investigators didn't find at the scene that has them expanding their investigation. >> right now the eyes of the world in south africa. we are listening in live waiting for the big announcement involving the olympic track star charged with murder. >> also the bay area connection to a deadly shooting on the las vegas strip. all ahead on channel 2 morning

news. >> good morning. thank you for joining us on this friday morning, february 22nd, i'm pam cook. >> i knew you could go it. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic first. let's go to steve. he knows all about your weather. >> cool to cold for some. 30s and 40s. sunny and nice. temperatures coming up a little bit. everything continues and could be a change on saturday. we'll talk about that coming up in five or six minutes. >> westbound 2:37 that looks good. no major problems. also the morning commute looks good on interstate 60 heading south. it's 5:00. >> all right. we begin with break news -- she has been there since 40:00 this morning. she is on bay shore road right now. tell us why investigators --

>> well it's a big accident scene. there's been a lot happening within the last half hour. take a look at what's happening behind me t. is the road we're talking about and you can see headlights off in the distance. investigators out here now trying to recreate what happened. they're taking measurements. actually if we pan down here i want to show you something. right here at the corner of this line is a measuring tape. we can pan down to the very end of it. if you look here, you can see it stretches then all the way down to where those headlights are situated and one of the investigators just told me this is a crime scene that stretches 200-yards. where we're stand as good where it all started. let me show you where the car ended up. it's again, 2 football fields down the road here. this happened about 2:00 this morning. police tell me that the driver was coming down east bay shore road for some reason, lost control of her car, hit a fire hydrant, was ejected from the car but that car just kept on

going and ended up really in the front area of a public storage facility. we were able to get pictures of the car only from highway 101. pulled over briefly in a safe area to get those shots for you because the scene stretches around the corner of where we're standing now. what's going to happen next? the coroners left the scene with the victim. the mobile command unit is on scene now and they have at least a few hours of measuring to do out here. there was a fire hydrant that had to be turned off. they also came out here because of a power pole was hit in that accident. all of that is secured now so all that's left to do is recreate what happened and what caused this accident in the first place. ktvu channel 2 news. >> we have developing news from newark this morning, police are investigating an overnight crash that injured one woman. matt keller joins us now from the scene at dairy and magnolia with a look at what's happening now. >> good morning. tow truck arrived in the past

15 minutes and its getting ready to take the car that's responsible for this crash. to the right on the vehicle there's still debris left in the road. even once they get the vehicle towed out of the area the officers will have to clean up this part of the road here with debris before they can open up. now the call came in just before midnight last night. police is a a vehicle hit two parked cars and then a tree. officers investigated in another car was involved in the accident. they canvassed the area looking for another vehicle and also called area hospitals to see if someone had come in with injuries consistent with a car crash. police say they found nothing. we asked if this was investigated as an accident or assault with a deadly weapon but they were not releasing any details saying they were still investigating. the woman on the scene was responsive and able to talk to police. she was taken to the hospital. no dairy here is blocked off. again the tow truck is removing the vehicle but we don't have a

time lynn on when the road is expected to open back up. matt keller ktvu channel 2 news. >> happening now in south africa as we told you about at 5:30, the judge in the oscar pistorius bail hearing is still talking, summarizing the case against oscar pistorius. for the past half hour we have been listening in to an audio feed coming straight from the courtroom. the judge has been talking about the media coverage of the case. oscar is accused of killing his girlfriend. the judge has been going over argument put he still hasn't announced if he will give bail to oscar pistorius. now legal experts from around the world expect bail will be given in the case. they say the prosecution used the four day hearing to push the defense to give up it's strategy before the full trial starts. prosecutor accused pistorius calling him a violent person bent on killing had was

girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. >> this is tragic what happened to reeva and tragic to what happened to him. we all support him. >> now the defense is arguing that oscar pistorius is not a flight risk. he won't try to escape because he can't get through airport security because he's so famous and because of his prosthetic legs. if he does get out on bail he could return to training as early as next week. again, we're keeping an eye on what's happening rite now in the south african courtroom. stay right here with ktvu. we'll tell you the bail announcement as soon as it is announced. >> the search continues for the suspect in a fatal shooting on the las vegas strip that killed an oakland native. the 27 year old aspiring rapper, scene here in a music video was sot while driving yesterday morning. investigators say shots were fired from someone in a black range rover. according to police, the

confrontation was sparked by an argument that started in the valet area of the aria hotel and then continued on to the strip. now we talked to his father. >> it's like somebody has taken a baseball bat and hit you in the back of the head. it's the worst feeling and it's just bad. it's just bad. >> the car smashed into a taxi which then burst into flames killing two people inside. >> 5:06 is the time this morning. homicide detectives in oakland are looking for suspects in a deadly shooting there. it happened around 9:00 last night at 79th and mcarthur boulevard. they found the victim inside a car that was riddled with bullets. family members say that victim was a man in his late 50s. it's still not clear what lead up to the gun fire. >> your time is 5:06, president obama now reaching out to republican congressional leaders talking about the

automatic budget cuts due to kick in just one week from today. now the president called house speaker john boehner and senate minority leader mcconnell. coming up, the new budget plan proposed by senate democrats and the impact here in california if the across the board spending cuts take effect. >> oakland mayor will be hosting a big party later this morning. it will be a colorful parade of boats and kayaks out there celebrating the reopening of a 750-foot section of the lake merritt channel. those boats will be sailing from the channel into the lake for the first time in 140 years. this is the first of a series of projects to reconnect lake merritt to the oakland and san francisco bay. >> we'll check pack in for a look at the friday morning commute. >> i like the way you said that. thank you very much. good morning to you both. the traffic is looking good.

we have had a little bit of road work here and there but it hasn't been major. sometimes on fridays we have lighter conditions. we're hoping that happens this friday. no major problems on 80 westbound as you drive west toward the bay bridge toll plaza. that looks good. so does northbound 181. 5:07, let's go to steve. >> pretty quite conditions out there. it's clear skies. doesn't mean it won't form but high pressure is moved in and everything is moving to the north. the extended outlook looks very quite and very dry which is not good. i've seen out to march 8th and 9th and there's little rain in there. we do have sunshine though and it will be warmer and a little cooler on saturday. next week though looking sunny and mild to warm. every system seems to drive in north and east of us. what we had on tuesday was good. 30s on the temperatures.

the coldest fairfield and napa 33. san francisco is 45 by the way. 30s each out to san jose, livermore, a chilly cold pattern. especially after the system on tuesday and except for a few high clouds, sunny and mild. high pressure, dry forecast building in. a little breeze, a system coming in late tonight into saturday morning. won't affect today but it will get clouds and maybe very light rain. i don't think it will do anything for saturday. sunny skies and temperatures, 60s now more so than 50s. a couple of mid 60s. 63 in redwood city. it will get chilly and breezy at times out of the northwest but overall looks good. cool and breezy, high, we'll split the difference around 50 degrees. cooler on saturday and sunshine and warmer temperatures sunday into next week. >> time now is 5:09.

welcome back to the an amazing story. two helicopter pilots came to the rescue of a hiker being stalked by a mountain lion. it happened last weekend on the popular stevens trail. now the hiker made a frantic 911 call. the lion was standing 20 feet in front of him. the sound of the period whicher probably saved the hikers life. >> i never scared off a mountain lion before. >> i shutter to think of what would have happened if he hadn't had a cell phone to call to help. >> they later went to the hiking trail and put up warning signs and is a he was forced to shoot and kill the mountain lion when it aggressively approached him. >> time is had 51:00 this morning. japan know what is caused some

of the problems with the 787 dream liner jet. investigators say fuel leaks were caused by a switch that didn't work and faulty taping was blamed for cracked cockpit glass. however the investigators are still looking into more of the serious battery problems that forced an emergency landing last month. all dream liner flights have been canceled since the middle of last month. back here at home, the ferry is so popular with commuters, they can't keep up with the demand. during the work week, they sell out, parking lots fill up. now the people in charge of the ferry's operation from was looking at the possible fixes and here's one possibility. adding another boat to the busy morning commute. now as for parking ideas on the table include charging for parking and building a parking garage at or near the ferry terminal. just one week from today across the board federal government spending cuts are scheduled to kick in. as she reports from our

washington d.c. news room, senate democrats are pushing a plan to avoid the devastating cuts. >> dave, the senate budget committee proposed as a combination of cuts and tax increases to avoid these automatic spending cuts known as sequestration. they want it spread out and close tax loopholes for oil companies as well. they would cut military spending. but this is a temporary plan which would delay until the beginning of next year. it's scheduled to take effect next friday. federally funded programs would get slashed about 10% across the board. that includes everything from the irs to education to national parks in california. for starters the visitors centers close area and campgrounds will shut down.

the driest web was 1863. this year .82. the 20th driest ever. october, november, december we're good. january, february, been lousy. been nice for sunshine because that's what we're going to get. sunny, mild to warm. everything continues to go up and over t. system will move into northern california. maybe lake county on saturday but today everything looks good to go. 30s and 40s to start off with. so still cold for some. slightly warmer today though lot of sunshine. i'm not counting the high clouds that come by. system will maybe bring rain down to lake county but i saw a projection of a .01 so i can't get too excited about that. it will be cooler for us and then sunshine and warmer weather kick backs in on sunday. just a few high clouds but everything staying east and north. 30s and 40s on the temperatures. the breeze tailed off a little bit yesterday compared to today. not bad on the coast but everything looks good for friday and temperatures are coming up just a little bit and again a little breeze out of

the northwest but still not as bad as yesterday. sunny and mild. patchy low clouds haven't formed yet. a breeze at timesful tsa a cool breeze but more 60s now than 50s. temperatures getting close to seasonal averages. 60 to 66 so we're inching there. great tomorrow, bundle up, cool and breezy but schools look mostly clear to me and temperatures starting off okay and then getting cool. cooler on saturday and sunshine and warmer weather. >> thank you, steve. european markets open with gains this morning. they're higher right now. they're following a lead of investors along the pacific rim. overnight japan and australia posted gains. they finished with losses overconcerns of economic policy tightening. >> checking in on our numbers, our futures indicate a good strong opening across the board for the dow, the nasdaq and s and p 500. they dropped a bit yesterday. we'll see if it can cross the

14,000 mark. they tried to raise fares three times this year and none of them stuck. but the 4th may change that. they raised $10 the price of tickets traveled on domestic flights and now they're following that lead and southwest has -- also on a limited scale but southwest participation maybe the key to keeping the higher fares. >> a popular food company recalling thousands of pounds of meat. the disturbing items found inseed some sausages

welcome back. time now is 5:23. a virginia meat processor is recalling 38,000 pounds of sausage. the smithfield packing company says small pieces of plastic, probably from gloves may have been processed with meat. the containers of meat is mild pork sausage role. it was produced on january 11th and shipped to texas and several other states in the east coast and the south but we understand not here in california. no one has reported being hurt after finding the plastic in the sausage. >> environmental groups are speaking out in favor of a ban on products in san jose. they'll vote on the ban next tuesday. today save the bay, california clean water action group and save our shores will talk about

cool. >> it's getting cold at night. >> has it ever? no kidding. also this morning at 30s and 40s but a lot more 30s although the breeze has tailed off and sunny and nice today. temperatures warming up. upper 40s, low to mid 60s here south. >> we're continuing to follow breaking news where police are investigating a deadly crash. it happened around 2:00 this morning on east bay shore road. police say that the female driver lost control and hit a fire hydrant was and ejected from the car. police are still on the scene trying to recreate the crash in hopes of finding out what may have caused the woman to lose control. she has been live since 4:30 and we'll have an update coming up at 6 :00. >> , now, back to the desk. >> we have developing news we're following this morning. police investigating a crash that involved a driver and a couple of parked car. ktvu's matt keller joins us now from the scene with a new development in last ten

minutes, matt. >> yeah, in just the past ten minutes the tow truck removed the vehicle that was responsible for this big mess here on dairy avenue and police also reopened the road. now behind me is one of the parked cars that was pushed up into a fence during the crash. just before midnight last night. now investigators are investigating if another car was involved in the area. they were looking for another vehicle and also called area hospitals to see if someone had come in with injuries like a car crash. they found nothing. it was assault with a deadly weapon but they were not releasing any details. the woman on the scene was responsive and able to talk to police. she was taken to the hospital. again, dairy avenue here at magnolia street reopened this morning in the past ten minutes so traffic is moving through this area at this hour. reporting live, ktvu channel 2 news. >> time is about 531, happening in san francisco, a student it is in at city college of san francisco. the students are still

occupying a campus building tara is there with the latest on the student take over and how the police are reacting to it. >> well it started as a it is in and now it's a sleep in. you can see the banners and signs hanging up outside. if you go inside a lot of students are already awake and they're camped out here in their sleeping bags. there's about 25 of them right now and these squatters are camped out here to save this community college. last night, dozens of students took turns talking while san francisco city colleges chief of police looked on. they're angry about proposed cuts and a meeting that didn't happen with the chancellor. students were told that the chancellor was out of town. >> i would say that it is because of the fact that we,

students and faculty and staff are not being heard and that's basically what we want is our voice to be heard and i understand that there was a missed opportunity to meet with the cans already. >> yeah, we were -- the chancellor. >> yeah, we were supposed to meet with her today so we got to meet with an assistance of an assistant of an assistant. >> frustrating. >> a little. >> all of this comes as city college fights to keep it's accreditation and avoid closure. the school has until march 15th to submit a plan. two extra officers were on the overnight shift but because protestors haven't been destructive or disruptive they have been allowed to say. back here live you can see there's about four officers inside. they told me that they're going to be evaluating the situation around 7:00, 8:00, decide what what to do and then the students themselves is a around 7:00 they'll hold a meeting of their own before they decide their next move.

>> this morning we're learning a police hunch lead to the han hunt for christopher dorner. he was fired from the police department back in 2009 for making false statements against his training officer. this officer says she had a nagging feeling that dorner killed the couple earlier in the month for revenge against the woman's father, a former police captain and one of the people dorner blamed for his dismissal. they found a manifesto posted online. each though he is dead she still fears for her life and has not yet returned home. >> president obama's nonprofit advocacy group is holding events all over the country in support of the gun violence reduction plan. now this day of action is the first national mobilization since the group called organizing for action was launched back in january. volunteers that helped the president get reelected are trying to help him get his

pollties through congress. they include rallies, phone banks and candle light vigils. >> they plan to hold a gun buy back tomorrow. they will join for the gun buy back event at city haul from 10:00 in the morning until 3 it's in the afternoon. the authorities will be paying from 100 to $300. it all depends on the type of the gun. in the meantime, ktvu news went undercover to investigate the big money assault weapon business in reno. that story is coming up up for you at 5:45. >> a group of 15 republican senators is pressuring the president to with draw his nominee for defense secretary. the former nebraska senator is expected to be confirmed next week. but in a letter to president obama republicans say the vote will be unprecedented because of the near unanimous gop opposition against them. now, bob doyle is urging fellow republicans to vote for him

calling him an exceptional leader. >> time now 5:35. family and friends of allen said their final good-byes to the young homicide victim. the 13 year old was laid to rest during an emotional ceremony at the cemetery yesterday. she attended green valley middle school in fairfield. the school plans to hold a fund- raising dinner for her family tomorrow. the man accused of killing her pleaded not guilty to murder charges. this is a picture of 32 year old anthony lamar jones from an earlier court appearance. had he is accused of sexually assaulting and killing conway allen and leaving her body at a fairfield park he is eligible for the death penalty and do in court next week. >> san jose's chilly finger lady is due back in court today accused of cooking up a new story. she was sent to prison for planting a receiverred finger in a bowl of wendy's chilli.

now he is accused of lying to protect her adult son who was found with a wounded ankle outside their home. the two of them made up an elaborate story about two men shooting him. they later uncovered evidence he shot himself. her son has a previous burglary conviction. he is not allowed to own a gun. >> right now it's 5:37. we want to go back over. he's looking in on the east bay. how's it look this morning. >> it looks good. so far we're looking at intertate 880 north and southbound. it's doing well so far. it's getting crowded. sometimes on fridays go have traffic that gets -- that is a little lighter than usual. we're hoping for that today. we'll see what happeneds. also the morning commute on the bridge looks good heading out to the high-rise. for the most part we're looking good here, if you are driving on the bay shore freeway all though that crash we're covering on the bay shore which

mixed precipitation back toward the nation's capitol and severe weather slicing through much of the deep south. it left a mark from west to east. we have a system that will stay to the north of us on saturday but i think it will give us a little bit of the cool down but today will be slightly warmer and ease back on the temperatures a little bit and then a little bit of rain, a little cooler than after that sunday beyond, looks really quite. sunny mild to warmer. low clouds, breezy at times. temperatures in the 50s but low to mid 60s now. antioch at 64. mountain view 62. redwood city 63. tomorrow just bundle up. it will be chilly out there and breezy with that system coming in saturday morning but overall, pretty quite pattern. there's been years past when it was pouring down rainful that won't be the case. sunday, monday, tuesday, lot of sun. >> all right. boy, bad weather, talk about this morning, a major winter snowstorm heading toward the northeast right now after battering the midwest.

that storm hit 20 states dumping as much as 1 inches of snow in some areas. we're looking at all the lightning here but in missouri, the bad conditions stranded so many drivers, a lot of people had to get out and push their cars. the storm canceled school and interrupted legislative sessions in some states. according to the flight tracking website, 400 flights are canceled today all over the country and there was a lot of lightning as well. >> boy it's spectacular. >> we have been listening in live since 4:30 this morning in south africa. right now oscar pistorius waiting to hear if he will be released for bail. the emotions of the track star during this morning's proceedings. >> also, a plane collapsing on the san francisco bay. all the questions investigators still have to answer about this and why it's not expected to delay the new span of the bay bridge from opening.

back to talk more. throughout all of this oscar pistorius has been emotional, crying at some parts of this, waiting to see if he will be released on bail. just another twist in what's been going on, prosecutors worked for four days in court to paint the stories as a killer who planned the murder of his girlfriend reeva steenkamp on valentine's day. prosecutors argue he is a flight risk if he is let out of jail but pistorius' lawyer tried to shoot holes in the prosecutors story. yesterday we saw the amazing development when the lead investigator was pulled off the case after 7 counts of attempted murder after a 2091 case were reinstated against him. it's been a week of interesting developments as we're watching what comes out of the south african courtroom. we're waiting to see whether oscar pistorius will walk away or go back to jail. we should know any minute now. pam, we'll keep you posted. >> all right. emily, we are watching it as well with you. we'll come back in as soon as that decision is made from the

judge. thank you for that. >> the investigation into what caused a crane to collapse in the san francisco bay continues this morning. the large crane was working to remove temporary support structures on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. when it toppled over, trying to remove a 258,000-pound steal beam. the beam punctured a hole in the barge but luckily no oil spilled out in the water. >> there's no reason to delay the operation in anyway. of course there will be an investigation by any number of parties into what happened in this incident. >> four workers were at the base of the new bridge tower at the time. no one was seriously hurt. the new span is expected to still open labor day weekend. >> time is a6:00. in freemont, several people recovering now after a multivehicle car crash that also caused a hazardous material scare.
